ANITA BORG INSTITUTE ENCOURAGES STUDENTS TO APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND THE 2010 GRACE HOPPER CELEBRATION OF WOMEN IN COMPUTING

By Jerri Barrett, Vice President of Marketing

Largest Event for Women in Computer Science and Engineering
Provides Opportunity for Students to Collaborate and Learn from Leading Technical Women

PALO ALTO, Calif. — March 8, 2010 —The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology announced today that scholarship applications are now being accepted for the 2010 Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference (GHC), which brings together women from all aspects of computer science and engineering. This year’s conference will be held September 28 to October 2, 2010 in Atlanta, GA. The deadline for scholarship applications is May 14, 2010.

Full and partial scholarships to this year’s conference are made possible through generous grants to the Anita Borg Institute from the National Science Foundation, Industry and Academic sponsors. Full scholarships cover conference registration, lodging for four nights, and travel expense reimbursement. Partial scholarships are also available. While the largest portion of scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students, junior faculty and members of non-governmental organizations and non-profits are also eligible to apply.

“Last year, 311 scholarships were awarded, a 23 percent increase from the previous year,” said Deanna Kosaraju, Vice President of Programs. “We reviewed over 900 applications, and we expect an even greater response for 2010.”

Applications are only being accepted online. A scholarship committee consisting of women and men from industry and academia perform reviews of the applications and scores each one. Scholarships are awarded to the candidates with the highest scores from a diverse cross-section of schools and regions.

“We encourage international students, women from smaller schools, diverse backgrounds and education to apply. We consider academic achievement, potential in the field, and need,” says Kosaraju. “But we also look for thoughtful, creative, well-written essays that stand out.”

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is a program of the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology and is co-presented with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).

The theme of this year’s 10th annual conference is “Collaborating Across Boundaries”. The conference will feature keynote speakers, plenary sessions, over 100 panels, poster session, and workshops led by successful researchers and professionals in the computer science industry. For more information about scholarships and GHC, visit our website www.gracehopper.org.

Come on ladies we know you are out there. You enjoy picking up that sniper rifle after a hard day’s work and hearing the “tink” of the headshot, and the thrill of the kill.
We know that you play, not because your husbands, boyfriends, or children force you to play, but you play for the fun and enjoyment.

The women who play video games, need to stand up and be counted. How many times do you go into a room and men automatically think you are a bad player just because you are female? How many men think you play not for the enjoyment of the game, but because you husband or boyfriend makes you play?

Gals is an all female gaming community. We enjoy playing game battles and just kicking butt. We are currently 6-1 in game-battles. If you enjoy playing Call of Duty we urge you to sign up for our community. Some women say “I like playing with men and don’t want to join an all female team.” By joining our community we aren’t saying that you can’t play with the guys, but how much fun would it be to beat them in game battles?

Woman who play video games, are underrated and need to be recognized as serious gamers. By forming all female communities this is the first step to show that we to enjoy the thrill of sniping, or running and gunning after work.
Put down your AK 47 for a minute and look us up the next time you are online. Just remember to tell your husbands, boyfriends, and sons, that the next time they play, they might be beat by a girl.
